Today you'll notice that I didn't title this post "Friday Foto Fun" like I normally do. Because what you are about to see has not been fun. Last weekend Nashville was hit with some of the hardest rains we've seen in a long time. The Cumberland River, which flows through downtown, rose over 13 feet above flood levels. The river runs along the right side of the picture above, so you can see how far it flowed into the city.
This impacted many businesses and historical structures downtown and along the Cumberland River. Four to five blocks of buildings were flooded from the river, or had water coming up from the ground flooding basements of buildings.
Many roads and bridges were destroyed.

And cars overturned. You don't think of flood water as being so powerful, but I've seen it first hand now. Yikes.

The following picture is what many streets are looking like after the waters have gone down. Sure, I've seen the news coverage of other cities flooding due to hurricanes and storms, and always felt bad for them. But when friends, co-workers and fellow church members that you know closely are effected, it takes this type of damage to a whole new level. I have friends whose houses had water up to the ceiling, losing everything, including both of their cars. I was told by the person who took this picture that this is what entire streets look like. One house after another has gutted everything. But because this area is hilly, the next street over may not have any damage.

It has been amazing to see our church rise up along side of so many people in need for church members as well as non-church members.
It has been amazing to see the entire community of Nashville coming together to help one another out. You can truly tell that people care for each other and want to help out, even if they don't know your name.
Here is a link for some more pictures.

The Bauman's home was not affected. But we have been instructed by the city to cut our water usage in half, since one of the two water treatment plants for metro Nashville is inoperable now due to the flood (no word on when it will be back up and running). So we're eating off paper plates, taking less showers, and drinking more juices. Shanna probably doesn't mind not having to keep up with the laundry as much this week.

Nashville will make it through this. God is much more powerful than any raging water or storm, and His glory will shine through this situation.
1 Peter 5:7 - Cast all your cares upon Him, for He cares for you.
Hebrews 13:5 - Your life should be free from the love of money. Be satisfied with what you have, for He Himself has said "I will never leave you or forsake you."
God Bless.

Thanks for sharing this with us. You are exactly right....we can see all the pictures on TV of cities affected by tragedies but until it hits close to home, the enormity of it doesn't really sink in. Glad you guys are safe and I pray for your friends and community who have not been so lucky. God bless you all!
Good thoughts and good summary of the week. You are so right that God is bigger than the storms and the floods, and He has shown Himself in mighty ways through the actions of people helping those in need this week.
